Our Roots

Ayurveda

Ayurveda is the oldest medicine in the world, going back earlier than 4000 B.C. Its origins are in India - by no coincidence where yoga originated. It is based on the use of plants for preventative and restorative health. Ayurveda is considered a Vedic Science along with yoga, meditation, and astrology. I have always known that plants are crucial to our existence. I recall my mother telling me of homemade medicinals and tinctures that her mother created from plants for illnesses, skin conditions and other purposes including dandelion wine! I studied Ayurvedic practices, herbalism, and aromatherapy and continue to learn as there is so much wisdom and knowledge from our ancestors. I now refer to the former as the original medicine and new big pharmaceutical companies as alternative medicine.

Herbalism

All medicines derive from plants. Most prescription drugs are merely a synthetic copy of a natural substance found in plants.

While many prescription drugs can be a life-saving necessity, herbal remedies, which have been used for thousands of years and can be found in our own backyards or kitchen cabinets, have none of the adverse side effects.  Herbal medicine allows us to take control of our own wellbeing by going back to the source. Human beings have co-evolved with plants. We eat plants, drink their juices, ferment and distil them, and consume them in a thousand different ways. There is evidence of herbal remedies being used 60,000 years ago. As we begin to return to a healthier way of eating and sourcing our food, we are also returning to the traditional ways of healing and relearning the skills and practices of “folk” medicine. As stated before, mother earth supplies us with everything we need.

Aromatherapy

In aromatherapy, inhaling the aroma of essential oils (or absorbing essential oil through the skin) instantaneously sends messages to that part of our brain known as the limbic system and the cerebral cortex.     This region has a huge impact on a number of responses including emotions, motivation, feelings, learning, attention and memory to name a few. Think about how a certain smell can trigger a childhood memory. The smell of roses takes me right to my grandmother’s home. Essential oils can effect a number of biological factors, including heart rate, stress levels, blood pressure, breathing, and immune function. Plants and essential oils have been used for thousands of years. This is not alternative medicine, it is the original way to prevent and heal, as well as make us feel better emotionally. Try Happy Roll-On, it totally lifts your spirits.
